James Richard Steinman, genannt Jim Steinman (* 1. November 1947 in New York), ist ein US-amerikanischer Rock- und Musical-Komponist und Musikproduzent.
Tätigkeit als Songwriter & Produzent
Er schrieb unter anderem einen Großteil der Meat-Loaf-Songs sowie mehrere Musicals, unter anderem die Musik zu Tanz der Vampire und den Text zu Andrew Lloyd Webbers Whistle Down the Wind. Die Songs, die er für Bonnie Tyler schrieb, brachen mit deren vorherigem Country-Image und machten sie über Nacht zur Rocklegende. Jim Steinman schrieb weiterhin die zwei Songs, die unter dem Gruppennamen Fire Inc. für den Soundtrack zum Film Straßen in Flammen aufgenommen wurden. Fire Inc. nahmen sonst keine weiteren Titel auf. Interpreten von Steinmans Songs waren unter anderem noch Billy Squier und Céline Dion.
Jim Steinmans Songs sind dafür bekannt, dass sie von vielen Künstlern über Generationen hinweg interpretiert werden. So stammt der Song Its all coming back to me now ursprünglich von dem Album Original Sin der Frauengruppe Pandora's Box aus dem Jahre 1989. Sieben Jahre später wurde das Lied von Céline Dion gesungen, ehe es dann wiederum auf dem Album Bat Out of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose aus dem Jahr 2006 als Duett von Meat Loaf und Marion Raven interpretiert wurde. Weitere Beispiele: Left in the dark wurde von Jim Steinman selbst, Meat Loaf und Barbra Streisand gesungen; der Meat-Loaf-Titel Readem and Weep (1981) wurde zwei Jahre später eine Nummer 1 in den US-amerikanischen Adult-Contemporary-Charts für Barry Manilow.
Seine bekanntesten Hits sind Meat Loafs Bat Out of Hell, Id Do Anything for Love (But I Wont Do That) und Bonnie Tylers Total Eclipse of the Heart.
Jim Steinman prägte den Wagnerian Rock, wie er seinen Musikstil in Anlehnung an Richard Wagner selbst nennt.
