Charles Kaufman, better known by his stage name Charlie Midnight, is an American songwriter and record producer who has been nominated for a Grammy Award (Writer, Best R&B Song, "Living in America," James Brown); two Golden Globe Awards; and has been a producer and/or writer on several Grammy-winning albums, including: The Bodyguard: Original Soundtrack Album (writer and producer "Trust In Me" - Joe Cocker, artist); Joni Mitchell's Turbulent Indigo album (writer "How Do You Stop," originally a moderate hit for James Brown); and the Marlo Thomas and Friends album Thanks and Giving All Year Long (writer/producer "I'll Give Anything But Up" - Hilary Duff, artist).

Biography

Midnight has produced and written songs for more than 30 films including Rocky IV,[1] The Bodyguard,[1] Bull Durham, Lizzie McGuire and Ruthless People, as well as for such notable and varied artists as: Cher, Billy Joel, Joni Mitchell (a duet with Seal), Barbra Streisand, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, James Brown, Chaka Khan, Joe Cocker, The Doobie Brothers, Weird Al Yankovic; Jamey Johnson, George Thorogood, John Waite, Hilary Duff, Dan Hartman and Paul Young.

Although primarily known as a producer/songwriter for other artists, Midnight actually began his career as a singer/musician himself, performing in several groups throughout the late 1970s/early 1980s, culminating in the release of his solo album Innocent Bystander in 1982.[2]

Shortly after this album, Midnight came to the attention of famed singer/songwriter/musician/producer Dan Hartman. The two began collaborating on songwriting, forming a musical partnership that would last until Hartman's death in 1994.

Some notable achievements:

In 1986, Midnight was nominated for a Grammy (Best R&B Song) for co-writing Living In America. That same year James Brown won a Grammy for Best R&B vocal.

In 1988 he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for writing the song "Why Should I Worry?" from Oliver & Company, and received a second Golden Globe nomination for writing the song "A Woman Loves A Man" from Bull Durham.

In 1994, he was a writer and producer ("Trust In Me" Joe Cocker) on The Bodyguard Original Soundtrack album, Grammy Album of the Year.

In 1996, he was a writer ("How Do You Stop") on Turbulent Indigo, the Joni Mitchell album that won the 1996 Grammy Award for Best Pop Album.

In 2006, he was a writer and producer ("I'll Give Anything But Up" Hilary Duff, artist) on the Grammy-winning childrens album Thanks & Giving All Year Long, executive-produced by Marlo Thomas and Christopher Cerf.

In 2010, Charlie co-wrote, Welcome To Burlesque, the first song that Cher sang in a film for the feature Burlesque. He also wrote My Way To You on Jamey Johnsons Grammy-nominated album The Guitar Song.

In 2012, Charlie was a writer (Welcome To Burlesque - Cher) on the Grammy-nominated soundtrack album Burlesque (Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for Visual Media).

In 2012, Charlie co-wrote two specialty lyrics for Barbra Streisand for her Back To Brooklyn tour.

In television, he has written the theme song Big Time Rush, for the hit Nickelodeon series of the same name. He also won a BMI Award for the theme song Daisy Does America for the television show of the same name.
